Joanne G. Carman, Ph.D.

Professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Dr. Joanne G. Carman is a Professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at UNC Charlotte. She teaches in the Master of Public Administration program and serves as the advisor and coordinator for students in the Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management.

She also participates in the Public Policy and Health Psychology Ph.D. programs at UNC Charlotte. Over the course of her career, Dr. Carman has worked with dozens of public and nonprofit organizations conducting program evaluation and applied research.

Dr. Carman’s research focuses on organizational capacity building, program evaluation, leadership, and governance. In 2020, Dr. Carman was awarded UNC Charlotte’s Bonnie E. Cone Professorship in Civic
Engagement, an award given to faculty whose teaching and research embodies the university’s commitment to civic involvement. She currently serves on the editorial board of Public Administration Review, and she is the Editor of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly.
